American Swing Dance

American swing dance was inspired by the swing style of jazz popular from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Today, we follow the same improvisational style and upbeat atmosphere of the original dancers, including the same music. Common swing dance styles we teach include East Coast, Charleston, and Lindy Hop.

Why Swing Dance?

Many universities, including Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, have their own swing clubs, allowing you to expand your horizons and meet fellow dancers from other schools. Harrisonburg also has its own swing scene. Information about that can be found at HarriSWINGburg!

Swing dance holds the same benefits as other forms of dance when it comes to movement and physical exercise, but boasts a unique versatility. Swing dancers can spin, dip, and lift, all in one song! In addition, anyone at any level of experience can dance together. Finally, swing dance is a great form for self expression and connecting with your partner.
